EThOSnet Newsletter, June 2008 - Get to know your toolkit
THE EThOS TOOLKIT IS LAUNCHED!
The updated EThOS toolkit was launched on Friday 6th June at the ETD 2008 Conference in Aberdeen during a presentation and demonstration of the EThOS system and the new toolkit. Feedback from delegates was positive.
In addition to full details of how your institution can participate, the interactive Toolkit provides practical information on how theses can be produced by students at your Institution so they can be accessed via EThOS and from your Institutional Repository. Accessed from its new location at http://ethostoolkit.cranfield.ac.uk the toolkit provides guidance on:
- Putting forward the case for the importance of electronic theses (Culture Change)
- Outlining the business case including information on which participation options suit (Business Needs)
- Clear standards provided on technical requirements (Technical Requirements)
- Practical materials and templates to be used for authors and supervisors in contributing to EThOS (Training and Guidance)
Exemplars and Guidance
Examples of practical support include model deposit agreements, alumni newsletter template, metadata standards & plug-ins plus training and publicity material to help your Institution adopt e-theses. The toolkit also contains advice on how best to ensure engagement with electronic theses at a senior level within your Institution and model procedures for moving towards mandatory submission of theses in electronic format.
Frequently Asked Questions
To ensure a high level of visibility of UK doctoral theses, sets of FAQs have been pulled together. These reflect different approaches to getting the most out of EThOS: at the Institutional level to develop electronic theses using clear standards; for Researchers who wish to search and discover UK doctoral theses; for Authors of theses who wish to increase the visibility of their thesis; and for Supervisors to effectively support their students and address key areas of concern.
Check it out!
Take a look and if there are questions, suggestions or amendments which you would like to see there please do let the EThOS Advocacy team know. The guidance and advice within the toolkit and FAQs lay down requirements EThOS need to operate in partnership with HEIs.
